The Teal Pumpkin

Halloween is my favorite holiday and it is coming up quickly. The spiderwebs are out, the scarecrows and mums are flanking my front steps, the ghosts are floating in the trees, and the batman costume that fits over a snow suit has been purchased! We just need to decorate our pumpkins and buy our treats for the trick-or-treaters. While planning for these princesses and pirates, the Teal Pumpkin Project comes to mind. This initiative was started by FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education) to raise awareness of food allergies and promote inclusion of all trick-or-treaters throughout the Halloween season.

Partaking in the teal pumpkin project is simple; you can paint a teal pumpkin, or print a picture of a teal pumpkin, and place it outside of your house so that children and families with food allergies know that you have a nonfood treat to share. You can also add your address to a map so that you are easily located for these special trick-or-treaters. Visit for more information and resources.

Here are some ideas for nonfood treats to have available this Halloween:

To keep Halloween safe for those children with food allergies you can place the nonfood treats in a separate bowl from the candy and allow the children to choose their treat. Have a safe and happy Halloween!
